The insurance approval process: An underwriting guideline
Outlined below are the steps included in the underwriting process for the purchase of life insurance.
The length of the underwriting process can vary, but most applications can be underwritten within three to six weeks.
As noted below, several factors may arise that can increase the processing time. However, we check each case weekly,
and our office will contact you if we learn of any problems or unusual delays.

Step 1 |
After we provide you a quote for life insurance, and once you approve it, we begin the underwriting process.

Step 2 |
A medical exam firm will contact you and schedule a convenient time and location to meet with you for a medical exam.
This can be done at your office, your home, or our office. The requirements may include any or all of the following: medical
questions, height/weight, blood pressure, pulse, blood/urine testing, and an EKG. We suggest a 10-hour fast prior to the testing.
There is no cost to you for this exam. For more information, see How to Prepare for Your Paramed Exam. [PDF]

Step 3 |
Our office will contact you to ask specific questions for the application. The questions include basic personal information (address,
telephone number, employment, Social Security number, driver's license number and dates of issue and expiration,1 etc.),
financial information (annual income, assets, liabilities2), and a few other questions (other insurance, smoking status,
hazardous sports, driving history, travel outside of country, etc.). We also confirm who the owners and beneficiaries of the policy will be.

Step 4 |
We will forward the completed paperwork to the insurance company for review by the New Business Department and an underwriter.
The underwriter will contact the lab to obtain a copy of your blood and urine results.3 The underwriter will also review
your application and medical history to determine if a copy of your medical records is needed. If records are needed, our office is
advised and we order the records directly from your physician.4 (Click here to
learn how we collaborate with your doctor and find you the best offer.) The underwriter may also order a copy of your driving
record from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and will also advise our office if any additional information is required or if
they have any specific questions regarding your application.
Depending on the amount of life insurance you are applying for, a telephone interview may be required. If applicable, a third party
will perform the interview, which will basically consist of you verifying the information already provided on your application.
All information will be kept strictly confidential between the third party and the insurance company.
Once all outstanding information is received, the underwriter will complete the review and make an offer for your insurance to
our office. We are notified of the decision and will contact you immediately with your status. Assuming all is still acceptable to you,
the underwriter will then forward your application to the Policy Issue Department, where your policy will be prepared and then mailed to our office.

Step 5 |
Once our office receives the policy, it is reviewed for accuracy and copied for our files. If the policy was not prepaid, we prepare an invoice and present it to you,
along with any outstanding requirements that need your signature. Your signature and your check activate the policy.
After you receive your policy, state law mandates that you have at least 10 to 30 days in which to return the policy for a complete refund if you are not satisfied.
Once your policy is in force, please contact our office with any questions that you may have or any service issues that may arise. Our office is available to assist
you in any way possible with your policy for as long as you own it, at no extra charge.

Notes
1. This is required by the USA Patriot Act to determine that we “know” you and have “seen” you.
2. Your annual income is required in order to substantiate the amount of insurance you are requesting. Assets and liabilities
(net worth) are required in order to assure that you are financially sound and also to justify the amount of insurance you are
requesting.
3. You may receive a copy of the blood and urine report by making this request in writing to the insurance company.
We can assist you in making this request.
4. Our office orders any medical records that are requested by the
insurance company. Most doctor's offices utilize a copy service to process the request for records, and the copy service generally
processes requests once a week. For the offices that provide their own copies of records, this process can sometimes take several weeks.
We will contact your doctor’s office weekly for a status; however, if we find that your doctor’s office is not responding in a timely
manner, we may ask for your assitance in contacting that office to
speed up the process.
